Bank of Scotland Award for Most Outstanding Business
This was a non-application award. The winner was decided by the main sponsor, chosen from the finalists of any of the other awards. They were the business most able to demonstrate all-round achievement, a clear vision for the future, success against objectives, sustained growth and be a standard bearer for success in Glasgow. Key behaviours of the winning organisation were strong leadership, dynamism, vision, creativity and a proactive approach to business. Back

Glasgow Business Award for Best Performing Business (25 employees or under)

The environment is tough for all organisations, let alone small business, so it’s important that SMEs have a clear focus on growth, success and sustainability. This award was intended to highlight successful small businesses with 25 employees and under. They were able to demonstrate a clearly defined strategy for developing and growing the business in terms of turnover, employment, innovative marketing and communications. Entrants were able to demonstrate a strong sales focus. Staff personal development and total involvement of the workforce in the growth of the business was important. In this ‘digital’ age, innovative approaches to product or service differentiation were key to success. The winner demonstrated entrepreneurial characteristics with dynamic and measurable systems in place, to monitor performance, financial controls, marketing and sales growth. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for Best Performing
Business (over 25 employees)
Aimed at larger businesses which have successfully grown their organisation and now operate with over 25 employees. Successful organisations demonstrated key characteristics such as strong leadership and a clearly defined vision for achieving growth through strategic objectives. Performance throughout the organisation were effectively measured and the organisational culture will demonstrate an approach to business, based on encouraging employee development, creativity and empowerment. Employees demonstrated strong proactive relationships with customers and suppliers. Entrants presented a strong performance record and explained how their business differentiated itself from the competition. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for Sustainable Development
Sponsored by Scottish Water
This category was open to any organisation, irrespective of size or industry sector. Successful entrants demonstrated that they were actively improving and adding value to their business through sustainable practices. Judges looked for evidence of efficiency savings in both internal operations and with product and/or service delivery/development. Entrants provided evidence in at least one of the following:
- Resource efficiency: measurable improvements in reducing consumption and improving efficiency in resource use (eg reducing energy, water and waste); use of sustainable materials;
- Energy: achievements in reducing carbon emissions by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy;
- Innovation: new and innovative ways of improving corporate sustainability in business activity and products. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for Creative Marketing
Sponsored by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau
This award was made for a specific marketing campaign in the period 1 Jan 2008 to 31 May 2009 that achieved high levels of commercial success. The judges looked for innovation and a clearly expressed and articulated objective-led campaign strategy. Entrants demonstrated how their marketing campaign has effectively improved business performance and results. With the current trading conditions, judges looked for businesses that managed to market their business on a budget.
The company successfully delivered a campaign or initiative promoting a product/service/business and included one of the following:
- A fully co-ordinated campaign;
- A pioneering or creative marketing initiative;
- A creative concept used in individual media (eg advertising, marketing, website). Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for Equality and Diversity
Sponsored by Glasgow Works
This award recognised an organisation, irrespective of size or industry sector that demonstrated inclusion, respect and development of under-represented groups and cultures. Entrants had to include the following:
- how you effectively promote your commitment to equality and diversity;
- a clear internal strategy that reflects equality and diversity from within the workforce and your customer base;
- demonstrate how your development of staff is fair, effective and non-discriminatory;
- demonstrate how you have achieved close ties with your local community to ensure recruitment of skilled resources from a variety of backgrounds;
- demonstrate general adjustments in the workplace which reflect the individual needs of an equal and diverse workforce. Back

Glasgow Business Award for Apprentice Employer of the Year
Sponsored by Glasgow City Council
This award was designed to acknowledge and celebrate employers’ commitment to developing their workforce through apprenticeships. Entrants demonstrated their commitment to training their workforce, embedding a training culture in their company, the range/number of apprenticeship frameworks supported and future training and apprenticeship development.
The training activities enabled the business to improve, grow and perhaps even survive, with measurable and quantifiable benefits. The successful employer was an exemplar and had the potential to act as a role model for other employers. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for Excellence in Skills and Learning

Open to organisations which demonstrated commitment to the learning and development of the workforce and, where appropriate, the supply chain. Organisations prioritised the pursuit of business excellence through the knowledge and skills of their staff. Successful organisations in this category demonstrated a strategic commitment to learning throughout the organisation, recognising the importance of the continual development of staff skills. Improvements in skills levels and achievement of externally recognised accreditations in turn translated into quantifiable benefits to the company. Back

This award recognised companies with a focus on customer service and care. Excellence in Customer Service was designed for businesses who can demonstrate excellence and achievement within the field of customer care and service. Entrants demonstrated excellence through their customer service objectives and strategy, business performance, customer care activities, staff development plans and showed how this has driven business growth.
