This is a non-application award. The winner will be decided by the main sponsor, chosen from the winners of the other awards. They will be the business most able to demonstrate all-round achievement, a clear vision for the future, success against objectives, sustained growth and be a standard bearer for success in Glasgow. The environment is tough for all organisations, let alone small business, so it’s important that SMEs have a clear focus on growth, success and sustainability. This award is intended to highlight successful small businesses with 25 employees and under. They will be able to demonstrate a clearly defined strategy for developing and growing the business in terms of turnover, employment, innovative marketing and communications. Entrants will be able to demonstrate a strong sales focus. Staff personal development and total involvement of the workforce in the growth of the business is important. In this ‘digital’ age, innovative approaches to product or service differentiation will be key to success. The winner will demonstrate entrepreneurial characteristics with dynamic and measurable systems in place to monitor performance, financial controls, marketing and sales growth. Back to Top

Aimed at larger businesses which have successfully grown their organisation and now operate with over 25 employees. Successful organisations will demonstrate key characteristics such as strong leadership and a clearly defined vision for achieving growth through strategic objectives. Performance throughout the organisation will be effectively measured and the organisational culture will demonstrate an approach to business, based on encouraging employee development, creativity and empowerment. Employees will demonstrate strong proactive relationships with customers and suppliers. Glasgow Business Award for
Best Use of Social Media

Social media involves real people, real conversations, real products, real companies, real brands all communicating in real time.
This award will recognise the most outstanding example of a social media application and encompasses all forms of social media platforms and applications. Entries can cover advertising campaigns, services, entertainment or products. Entries will be judged on the innovative and effective use of online communities, engagement with these communities and the success achieved as a result.
Judges will be looking for the best, most creative, innovative or highly effective use of online social media and moreover the ability to achieve the objectives and outcomes desired. Judges will also be looking for evidence that social media was integrated fully into the campaign from the beginning of the planning process and had a pivotal role within the campaign.
Entrants are particularly encouraged to clearly outline and provide evidence for the user engagement and social use of their entries. Entries must demonstrate that the initiative fostered genuine two-way dialogue and delivered tangible results. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for
Sustainable Development

This category is open to any organisation, irrespective of size or industry sector. Successful entrants will demonstrate that they are actively improving and adding value to their business through sustainable practices. Judges will look for evidence of efficiency savings in both internal operations and with product and/or service delivery/development. Entrants will provide evidence in at least one of the following:
- Resource efficiency: measurable improvements in reducing consumption and improving efficiency in resource use (eg reducing energy, water and waste); use of sustainable materials;
- Energy: achievements in reducing carbon emissions by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy;
- Innovation: new and innovative ways of improving corporate sustainability in business activity and products. Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for
Creative Marketing

This award will be made for a specific marketing campaign in the period 1 Jan 2009 to 31 May 2010 that achieved high levels of commercial success. The judges will look for innovation and a clearly expressed and articulated objective-led campaign strategy. Entrants will demonstrate how their marketing campaign has effectively improved business performance and results. With the current trading conditions, judges will look for businesses that managed to market their business on a budget.
The judges will be looking for the company to have successfully delivered a campaign or initiative promoting a product/service/business and including one of the following:
- A fully co-ordinated campaign;
- A pioneering or creative marketing initiative;
- A creative concept used in individual media (eg advertising, marketing, website). Back to Top
Glasgow Business Award for
Equality and Diversity

This award recognises any organisation, irrespective of size or industry sector that can demonstrate inclusion, respect and development of under-represented groups and cultures. The judges are looking for examples of best practice from companies and organisations which will inspire others to take action. Entries should show impact in one or more key areas of:-
Business – supporting new businesses from under-represented groups; developing diverse markets, services and supply chains; maximising the trading potential of internationally well-connected black and minority ethnic minority companies.
Place – attracting and enabling economic growth in our most deprived communities.
People – achieving full potential and opportunities for all through raising aspirations, developing skills and enterprise and improving employability.
Entries should also demonstrate impact in one or more of the seven key strands of
equality ie Age; Gender; Ethnicity; Disability; Sexual Orientation; Gender Re-assignment; Religion and Belief.
A successful entry will detail specific, measurable activities the business or organisation has undertaken to achieve core business and societal benefits. The judges will be looking for businesses and organisations tackling equality and diversity across their whole business, and for those organisations demonstrating real zeal in the development and execution of equality and diversity related products, services and solutions which support under-represented groups and communities. Apprentice Employer of the Year

This award is designed to acknowledge and celebrate employers’ commitment to developing their workforce through apprenticeships. Entrants will demonstrate their commitment to training their workforce, embedding a training culture in their company, the range/number of apprenticeship frameworks supported and future training and apprenticeship development.

Tourism Event of the Year

This award covers Events and Festivals of a substantial nature. These are likely to involve large volumes of domestic and international visitors and a timed programme. It can be for either a paid entry or free audience/attendance event. The event can be a one-off happening, or one in a rolling series of annual events with a proven track record. Festival and events must have taken place between April 2009 and March 2010.
Entrants will demonstrate a high degree of creativity and dynamism and will be exploring ways to exploit their own tourism offer in the wider Glasgow area through partnership working with other tourism providers or working with non-traditional tourism businesses.
Entrants should be able to demonstrate commitment to growth and success in achieving planned objectives, for example in terms of visitor numbers, turnover, employment, quality assurance ratings, or local and national impact. Entrants should be able to prove a track record in customer satisfaction and a continued commitment to exceeding customer expectations by providing a unique customer experience. Back
